Day Rulership

02/20/2023

Happy Moonday to you!

Have you ever wondered why I say that sometimes? It's because, traditionally, Mondays are associated with the moon. Each day of the week essentially has a planetary "ruler" that is actually often reflected in the language we use.

A few examples:

  • Monday, Moon-day. In Spanish, lunes for Monday and luna for moon.
  • Tuesday is martes in Spanish, and Mars is the planetary ruler of Tuesday.
  • Thursday is Thor's Day, and Thor is another name for Jupiter, the ruler of Thursdays.

Here's a quick table outlining Day Rulership:

Have you ever noticed how many people dread going to work on Mondays? And on a day that feels "blah," and all you want to do is go home and sleep or do something fun...what do people often say on days like that, no matter what day of week it is? "It feels like Monday." "...a case of the Mondays." "It's such a Monday today..."

Why do you think that is?

Certainly, it has a lot to do with the fact that many people are coming off of a weekend of greater leisure into a day back at the office or the classroom or what have you.

I personally believe it's more than just that. Monday is ruled by the moon. The emotional, inner-world, intuitive, mothering energy that just wants everyone to feel and belong. Moon energy wants us curled up in blankets, sipping a warm beverage, journaling out our emotions or cuddled up with loved ones watching a movie. That, or feeling into our intuition and exploring our inner worlds.

That doesn't sound like the right kind of energy for getting back to "the daily grind" of the work week!

In many ways, western culture has taught us to ignore natural rhythms and cycles in order to pursue goals and achievement. And, while that isn't automatically a bad thing, it can disconnect us from nature, our bodies, and our intuition in ways that make us sick--physically, emotionally, mentally, energetically, etc.

How often do you find yourself not resting when you're tired? Stuffing down emotions for a more "convenient" time? Going to work or school before your body or heart is ready after giving birth, because of societal expectations or financial pressure? Finding yourself clearing out your garage when you're in the middle of your period and your body is longing for a pause? Holding back your excitement over some super awesome thing, because it would be considered rude or strange to dance and sing in the middle of the grocery store? Not being able to fully grieve the loss of a loved one, because it's been "long enough" since they died?

Your body is speaking to you.

The sun and moon are calling to you.

Your emotions are trying to tell you something.

Are you able to listen?

Is there space in your life to honor your own cycles of emotions and hormones and transformation? Is there space in your schedule to honor the cycles of seasons and changes in weather?

And if your answer to the first question is "no," but your answer to the second question is "yes," what could you change in your life to bring yourself in closer alignment with what your body and spirit needs, so that you can follow the healthy, natural cycles that are a part of your soul's development?

If your answer to both questions was "no," is that how you truly want to continue living?

One of my greatest desires with this work is to help create space for more of us to honor our own cycles and seasons. I want it to be okay for you to take a day off of work to care for your mental health BEFORE your mind is dangling by a thread. I want it to be more than okay; I want it to be normal and embraced--by you and by our culture at large.

We are human, and it's time we all stop pretending that we're machines.

So, what does all of this have to do with day rulership??

Well, one way that I've been able to create some space in my schedule and life for honoring cycles and seasons has been to designate at least part of my day to things that resonate with the energy of that day's planetary ruler. Even if I can't yet shape my entire life around my energy cycles, I can do something to give myself greater grace, spaciousness, and ability to honor whatever season or cycle I'm in.

Over the next few weeks, I invite you to play around with planning at least some of your life around the rulers of the days and see what happens? I'd love to hear about what you discover! You can email me at kayelee@kayeleerose.com or comment on this post.
